Monochrome pen and ink drawing – 2014

The picture features a dilapidated B-24 Liberator bomber covered in graffiti and bird shit. It is flying over the Melbourne suburb of Thornbury, close to where Andrea and I were living at the time. This is a metaphor for a threat to the peace and security of all that is familiar and that we love.

The picture is intended to give a sense of things falling apart, whilst some public figures around the world escape justice, despite egregious behaviour. So, the picture includes Wayne LaPierre, former CEO of the National Rifle Association in the USA, disgraced UK TV personality Jimmy Savile and the late cardinal George Pell. A nasty trio, if ever there was one, all skilled at hiding in plain sight.

Beautiful birds of prey swoop around the aircraft, contrasting the dreadful human behaviour with the beauty of the natural world, but also creating their own slight sense of threat.

This picture was a finalist in the 2014 Rick Amor drawing prize.
