This not very cheerful image is of a world ensnared by a viper, representing authoritarianism. Overlaid with hapless figures and disparate symbols from the past, (harnessing the nostalgia beloved by proponents of populism, such as images from the Second World War), it includes ironic depictions of an early 20th century world where everybody “knew their place” but cruelty was commonplace.
Falling naked figures reflect the growing sense of vulnerability across the world as “Things fall apart…”, placards and flags speak to disappearing values and the pathos of patriotism as a ‘last refuge of scoundrels’.
The whole world teeters on the tip of a fascist dagger, surrounded by wheelie bins, a common symbol of environmental degradation and consumerism in my practice.
Of course, the title is an oxymoron – there are few circumstances in which mockery can be graceful, but I try to get some kind of balance!
